Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Aikura area and Suganuma area) and other villages with unique landscapes were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage) in December 1995 under the name "Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Villages".
